WHAT IS CRYOTHERAPY?

The word "Cryotherapy" is from the Greek words "CRYO” meaning cold and “THERAPIA” meaning treatment. It refers to a procedure that uses extremely low temperatures to provide therapeutic benefits to the human body. The process was invented in 1978 by Toshima Yamaguchi, MD, a Japanese medical doctor who was seeking an effective treatment for his patients with rheumatoid arthritis. His early therapies involved applying freezing instruments to small, targeted areas of a person's body, and the process has now evolved over time into a whole body treatment. Further studies and research in Europe over the last 20-30 years have established whole body Cryotherapy as a powerful tool for not only athletic recovery, but also a treatment for a variety of conditions and ailments.

Many of the reasons why we get sick, injured, or contract disease is due to excessive inflammation that weakens the immune system within the body. The main goal of Cryotherapy is to reduce inflammation. The procedure triggers a fight-or-flight survival response that causes blood to temporarily leave the less important extremities for the body's core. The body prepares to fix any potentially damaged vital organs by pushing more oxygen, enzymes, and nutrients into the blood, and when the treatment is over, that enriched blood flows back into the rest of the body, accelerating cell renewal in tissues and skin.

Besides the obvious help in reducing inflammation and pain, Whole Body Cryotherapy has been cited to enhance metabolism, decrease recovery time, reduce depression, improve skin condition, and promote a higher quality of sleep.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

IS IT LIKE DOING AN ICE BATH?

NO.

An ice bath treatment can last from 10-20 minutes. The Whole Body Cryotherapy treatment is only 3 minutes. An ice bath just treats the area submerged in ice. The benefits of Whole Body Cryotherapy are felt in the whole body. After an ice bath, you are left feeling very stiff and wet, so the treatment is usually done at the end of a workout or day. A Whole Body Cryotherapy treatment can be done at any time of the day, even 30 minutes prior to a workout.

IS THE NITROGEN GAS DANGEROUS?

NO.

Nitrogen is a non-toxic gas. The earth’s air that we breathe is made up of 16% Oxygen, 1% Hydrogen, 78% Nitrogen and 5% other components. You are elevated during your treatment so that your head and shoulders are above the nitrogen.

ARE THERE CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR CRYOTHERAPY?

YES.

Whole Body Cryotherapy is not recommended (contraindicated) for those persons with the following conditions:

Pregnancy, acute myocardial infarction (MI), unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis (blood clots), acute cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, cold allergy, acute kidney diseases and severe Hypertension.

If you are in doubt or concerned about a condition that you may have, we may ask you to obtain a signed letter of consent from your physician.
